Chai and a few dosas

Theirs was a successful marriage.45 years and a few odd months. And when he sat in his rocking chair on dark evenings, that's what pulled him through. The thought of his wife coming home and making him a cup of tea. Watery and a tad too sweet- but some things just grow on you. Their only son was in Chennai. They lived in a small house in Mumbai, a blessing considering his failing eyesight and her weak back. He retired after a brilliant yet uneventful 30 years in a bank. His wife was the most respected teacher in a school nearby, and when she retired they had about 20 tearful children lining up in front of their house. With not much else to do with their time, they argued with each other. About inane things- like the news reader on TV or the rip on his old nightshirt. Sometimes he overslept in the afternoon and would wake up to find his wife watching documentaries on the polar bears or something just as inconsequential. But then at their age, everything was inconsequential. Sometimes he cooked, most times she did. On rare occasions they went to a nearby eat out and ate overpriced dosas amidst collegiate chaos. He smiled to himself thinking of how she would make him total the marks on the answer papers she'd check at school. Or how she'd worry about the seemingly heavy bags her students lugged to school.

And he realised how close they were, or how much she meant to him, when she decided to make a trip to her sister's place in Pune. She insisted she go alone, she'd manage it, she said. And the past few days he found himself aching for her tea, her presence and her constant nagging about his weight. It struck him that 45 years isn't forever- but it's close enough.

Burnt crust.

Who would have thunk?

She wrote him letters,

He sent her flowers and candy. Sometimes. By speed post.

She read the sports section of the news paper to please him,

He pretended to be impressed when she knew the cricket score.

She cried softly when he went for dinner with another woman. But she didn't own him, did she?

He stopped going for dinner with other women, to please her. He liked being owned.

She cooked pasta because he liked it.

He moved cities so he could eat her pasta.

She invited him over sometimes. They'd watch a movie. Maybe two.

He always brought along a bottle of wine. Red.

She proposed to him, on a bended knee.

He turned red, wished he'd done it first but said a vehement yes.

On their two month anniversary,

She made him a deep chocolate cake and laid out the crystal ware.

He died in a car crash.

She screamed, smashed the crystal ware and threw away the cake.

She never made pasta again.

Six years later,

She was making pasta, with hot bubbling guilt.

And when her husband handed her the sports section,

She threw it away. She already knew the cricket score.

Who would have thunk?

Don't worry.it's bound to be okay

Don't sweat about it. Everything is bound to finally be your way, eventually.
The people you like will finally realise your worth, like you understood theirs.
The people you don't will quit crossing paths with you.
There will be a day when you'll wear your favorite clothes, and NO it won't rain, and your classes will get cancelled, and you'll laugh a lot,and won't feel upset about anything.
You will feel loved, cared for and adored.
You will get that ocassional A+
You will get your Integration right.or atleast close to right.
Your exams will be over before you know it.
You will turn red with suppressed laughter in the middle of a dead-serious lecture when you think of the madness that you did in the previous day's break.
The trains will be empty.
Your notes will eventually be complete, your room clean and your phone balance high.
Someone unexpected will call/message you and make you feel special.
You will not fight with your friend over something inane.
Don't worry it's bound to be okay.

" I am leaving!"
"Are you threatening me?"
She grabbed her bag and started walking towards the door."Are you threatening me,Maya?" He yelled. She turned behind and said, " Till a few days back, I would have said yes. But the point is, every time, it fills me with hope that you'll ask me to stop. To wait. To not go. But that never happens, and in the end I stop, and not go, even if you don't say a thing."
"You're an attention seeking brat,Maya. The beginnings of a tantrum and Daddy dearest will buy you the world." He sneered, and lit a cigarette.
" How dare you say that? What have you given this relationship, Sam? Cold mornings? Bitter arguments?Uncomfortable dinner-table conversations? What should I be grateful for? For the nights when I DON'T cry myself to sleep? For the mornings when you say Good Morning without sarcasm? For the times when you are ready to cut up your heart and place it on a platter for others, but brush me aside?"
The last line seemed to hit a nerve."Don't say that. You are only talking about the worst of times. We have our good times,we do."
"Sam, we have the most amazing times together and that is why, I am willing to fight for us. That is why every time I threaten to leave, I turn behind and come right back in.What do you want to do, Sam.Tell me.Do you want to fight for us, or do you want to turn over to the other side and smoke it all up?"
"I don't know."He said, indifference dripping off every word.
" Then when you do know, give me a call. We'll figure it out."
She turned behind and started walking towards the door, again. "You're leaving?"He said, his voice giving away nothing. " Yes. Either way, i am going to get hurt. At least this way, I'll get hurt on my own terms."
She opened the door and walked out, closing it with a soft thud.

Be Assured

I will get up extra early every morning so I can chat with Ma.
I will not send impulsive messages. If I'm upset I will not react.
I will buy Dobby his gifts.
I will enjoy the stress while it lasts.
I will not say negative things.
I will laugh, and laugh till my sides hurt.
I will think of worse things, if anything feels bad.
I will not snap at people unless they really deserve it.
I will not cry myself to sleep, even if I'm super stressed and dying.
I will not let other people know how much their words/actions hurt me.
I will stick to my priorities.
I will call Snoopy everyday before 11.45 pm
I will stop borrowing pencils from friends.
I will remember to carry paper.
I will not think negative as much as possible.
I will be strong through all this.
I will love what I'm doing and remember that I am capable of doing it well.
I will not cry myself to sleep.
I will not beg.
never.
I will not take shit. Or I'll take some, if its worth it.
I will not give shit.
I will not cry myself to sleep.

guilt trips

not too long,
probably on a dusty train window,
and through cryptic text messages,
it will all come to you.
You may try to run,
shield yourself
with an old copy of India Today,
But it won't work.
It will be like those rainy days,
when you get soaked,
no matter how fast you run.
Or probably those days at school,
when in about 100 people,
the teacher sees
the bubblegum YOU are chewing.

Dobbicles

I hope my Dobby finds this and reads it. He is quite a weird kid, house elf actually. He smiles in his sleep and sing "you're so nice and you're so smart, you're such a good friend I can break your heart" which i thought was a song that he cooked up when he was supposed to be cleaning the shoe cupboard. But Dobby made me listen to it on his IPOD and it is a real song.My Dobby plays his guitar and taps his foot in rhythm. He sings and then throws his pokey head backwards and laughs. He falls asleep with a book in his hand, which is weird coz Dobby is illiterate.Dobby has a little yellow pouch that his master got him, and he keeps his prized possessions in it. Which include earphones, earbuds, and earrings.and a little dust.and a torn bus ticket.Dobby supports Royal Challenge(rs?)Banagalore, because he is a devotee of Rahul Dravid, and Dobby prays at night when everyone else sleeps.Or so i would believe.Dobby is a darling. My Dobby is like no other.Which is pretty much understood, because there is only ONE Dobby :D

sarcasm is a beautiful thing..

"ohhhh my goooddddd!i have the same novel." "yeah, they publish more than one copy nowadays."

"are your notes useful?i mean will they be of help?" "no,they are pretty crap..i find it very amusing to write sheet after sheet of bullshit."

"did you find the cameras?" "yeah, thats why i am under the table." (FRIENDS)

"does this calculator open?"(looking at a scientific calc with a cover)"no,you just look at the cover and if your faith is strong enough then the answer magically appears."

"Are you guys like studying?"(to a bunch of people who have their noses buried in books.) "no, no..just having fun..you know..the usual,a bit of economics a dash of history..just a few old pals having a good time."

"whats that?"(pointing to a cellphone.) "its a remote control."(completely deadpan voice)

"are you gonna study for exams?" "are you crazy?who does that anymore..its like so 19th century!!"

I'm there.

The place was full of people,a sea of black. They stood in groups, some made small talk. Some merely dabbed at their eyes.Adam killed himself. He slit himself. His once strong wrists were in a mangled mess.I vaguely remember yelling myself hoarse when my father walked into the room and said,"Honey..Adam's dead."Just like that.No prelude. No explanation.!8 years and 2 seconds. We come down to the same thing.Adam..who stuck his tongue out and yelled "you're a girl..boo" when we were small and played cricket.Adam..who punched me in my stomach, because i called him ugly.Adam..who fought with me because he knew i'd still be his best friend.Adam..who spoke to me at night on the phone, till i practically fell asleep.Adam my best friend for 18 goddamn years. Is dead. And all i can do is yell.
The priest is whispering something to Adam's dad.He signals to me and i walk up to him, my legs feeling like lead."Adam would have wanted you to talk."
I walk up to the altar,a churchfull of people looking up at me.their faces solemn.
i begin,my voice quaking so much that i cant understand what i am saying.i breathe and start again
"If it were upto Adam, now,id probably wearing a pair of old shorts and my nightshirt. If it were upto Adam,id probably be carrying his cricket bat.But its not upto him anymore. In the past few months,i lost my best friend.I couldnt get myself to talk to him.He scared me.He wouldnt talk.he never smiled.he'd brood all day long.I really dont know why.And the loser that i was i never asked.I gave him his space. But thats where i messed up.Because sometimes when people say "Leave me alone" they actually mean "im dying of loneliness.please come and hold my hand, because i cant face this alone." Adam was the last person who people thought would kill himself.Because when you're cricket team captain, class rep,the best looking guy around and have a wonderful set of parents, your life is perfect.Apparently not.Beneath all this Adam was just another guy,who watched FRIENDS and laughed and hoped that his best friend would call, when she'd just hung up on him.She didnt.Im sorry Ad.Im sorry,i was away fighting my own demons when you needed me to help fight yours.Especially since all my life, you have fought mine.Im sorry. It sounds cold, but really i am here for you.Its useless now.It really is. I was always there.just that i didnt make sure you knew it.What can i say?One day we'll talk it out, over a Chicken Sub and coke. And no issues, this time i'll pay for dessert. We'll talk it out."

I walked out of the church, crying too hard to talk. And if im not mistaken i felt the presence of a tall, handsome boy with a broad smile and a cricket bat.

4:34pm:Settle for vadapav, that is consumed in a minute.Eat more than half the packet of pure
magic biscuit that friend has purchased for herself.Aware that friend might be cursing

cracks.
6:30pm:Get up to leave, full of vegan shake and packets of sugar!
7:00pm:Reach churchgate stn,in a bad mood, for no apparent reason.Board stupid train and crib
to friend, who patiently listens to my tales of woe!
8:00pm Take a bus at andheri stn that is very crowded.Listen to music.Hear the song 'yeh ishq
haeee" thrice on different radio stations.
8:20pm:Reach home to see ghar ke lights off.Realise its that 'batii band' thing.Feel proud of
parents.
8:45pm:Go for bath.Come out with chattering teeth.Hurriedly change and crash into bed after

Reasons..

Reasons why i believe that Junior college was nicer and simpler than senior college:
~ Everyone smiled at everyone, said hello and didnt look harrowed and close to tears, even on the day of exams!
~People discussed civilized enjoyable topics like the weird pink shrug some XYZ girl wore and who got chucked out in Hindi Tutorials as compared to now where people feverishly jabber about how long each answer has to be in the psycho paper!
~People didnt badger you by asking HOW many honours programmes you've signed up for and didnt go all narrow-eyed and shriek "ONE CREDIT?!THATS IT!!!???"
~There were no seminars,no research papers,no seperate attendance for each subject and NO 8a.m. lectures!
~ALL MY FRIENDS WERE IN MY GODDAMN CLASS..!!!
~French classes were fun,laid-back and not friggin drill sessions with people yelling "Madame Trente-six..Madame,i missed my attendance..Desole..je suis..arrgghhh"
~Projects mean loads of MMR lectures where people cheered and smiled and we watched movies every opportunity we could.
~We were still the kids..
~We still had 3 full years to go in college..time flies..*sigh*
~we knew exam marks would be okay..if not great..NOW..well..no comments.
~I didnt even have to make a library card..now i have to actually USE it..
~we had textbooks that catered to our needs..now,text books are for light-reading.. or you might have these manic children breathe down you r necks hissing," didn't you refer H.L.Ahuja..are you joking..the text book is bullshit..i did Ahuja thrice" yeah..THANK YOU.
~there is no misery-in-company coz all my friends have different subjects.
~Different subjects means hardly any co-ordinated studying..man,i actually have to make my own study schedule.
~SIP..SIP..its the bloody bane of my life..how much social service can an average 18 year old do..JUST TELL ME...i hope to the heavens above that, the dude who decides whether you go to heaven or hell when you die,is watching this..coz this social service had messed up my social life.

thats it for now, will crib more later.Merci beaucoup!

you pick..

can i call you?
i realised you hung up,
and not nicely too.
will you speak to me,
if i say i wont argue?
we can talk about anything you like.
i wont snort,if i think its too mundane,
i wont groan if i can't understand..

will you walk with me?
we dont have to go somewhere pretty..
we dont have to go somewhere nice
i wont walk too fast,
i wont get distracted,
and i promise not to wave at random people on the road.

can we sit on the porch together?
i wont keep cutting across what you're saying..
i wont tap my feet impatiently..
we can just be,
silent if you feel like it..
and if you want,
i'll keep my opinions to myself, for once..

feel like an icecream?
i promise not too get all giggly,
and i wont laugh too loud,if you spill..
we can just walk through,
and if it melts,
and that made you smile,
i wont pull a face and ask why.

we can have a mean game of squash,
and if i lose,i wont get angry,
and if i win,i wont rub it in,
we can just be ourselves,
and if it gets too much,
there's always chess :)

but can i ask you once?
after all this, will you still like me?
because,if i do become such a good girl,
i wont be myself..

thats what made me happy..

apologies for sounding self-obsessed in the post below..but yes books make me happy..so i am just gonna ramble about the books i love and treasure..

1.Kite Runner: Khaled Hosseini spins magic with this one..hit me as hard as it could have. brilliant, moving, exceptional use of language. Its never ceases to amaze me how he described Baba so perfectly.everyone actually, but i was in awe of Baba by the end.truly,"you cant love some people, without hating them a bit."

2.To kill a mockingbird:This book is life-changing..at the end of it,you just go down on your knees and thank God,if he is listening, for Atticus.

3.Anne of the Green Gables:People found it syrupy,i loved it..very imaginative,very earnest!

4.The God of Small Things: not so much for the plot, more for the rambling..and it also helps that she is curly haired :)

5.Not without my daughter: Brillliant brilliant brilliant book.and there comes a point when you're like..i couldnt get safer than this!!

6.Can you keep a secret?:Kinsella is chick-lit galore..loved this one..quick read.good laugh

7.To sir with love: You probably missed it on the book shelf, but this one's totally worth a read..

8.Five point someone: who doesnt like this one?!i like Ryan the best though..pretend-tough eh?

9.Interpreter of Maladies: Jhumpa Lahiri at her best, liked this better than Namesake.

10.A fine balance: Tragic. But sad stories make brilliant books.this one couldnt have brought out the statement better.one of my favourites.Mistry makes you think, and HOW!

11.O Henry short stories: i loveddddddd them!!!!!!

12.Animal Farm: Clever.very very very clever.

13.James Herriot Series: by the end you'll love animals.or atleast reading about them.no pretences.no hang ups.just a whole lot of 'feel-good' happening.'Coz in the end,he sets it all right!

14.The flying chair series:Enid Blyton should be honoured the world over for making children believe that magic exists..you just have to look hard and in the right places. Clue:if you walk around looking at shoes..chances are you wont find magic, and might get your skull cracked by being run over by a truck.

15.Windmills of the Gods:Sidney Sheldon's best,in my opinion.Nothing lasts forever came very very close, but this on is very well written.no loopholes,as far as i looked.

16.Princess Diaries: chick-lit again..but i loved this as well..its a good thing,to read chick-lit once in a while.

17.Catcher in the Rye: builds such a nice picture, and i love books that dont have plotS!

18.HARRY POTTER!: wokay,i love harry potter and those who don't..HOW!?!!!!!!*falls in shock, like petrificus totalus!*

many others, which i will add eventually..as of now.. sleep beckons..
so now..good night.keep safe.and dont worry.the world wont end between now and tomorrow.so worry tomorrow.sleep well :)
